The Electronics Sourcing Brief
What to actually source at Canton Fair Phase 1
Quick Facts
The 5 Things That Actually Matter
Register online now — pick up your badge before you arrive
Pre-register at buyer.cantonfair.org.cn (year-round). Then collect your badge at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (T2/T3), Guangzhou South Railway Station, Pazhou Ferry Terminal, or any of 60 designated hotels. Bring: passport + business card + pre-registration QR code. The whole process takes about 30 seconds.
Days 3–4 are the sweet spot
Days 1–2 (Oct 15–16) are crowded with window-shoppers. By Days 3–4, the traffic thins and factory reps have time for serious conversations. Plan your high-priority meetings for Thursday and Friday.
Pre-shortlist 10–15 booths
Use the Canton Fair App to search exhibitors by product category and hall. Pre-book meetings with your top 5. The halls span Areas A through D across multiple buildings — a printed shortlist saves hours.
Bring a one-page product spec
Include: target unit cost, annual volume, certifications required (CE / FCC / RoHS / UL / UKCA), key dimensions, and a rough sketch or reference photo. Booths respond to specifics — vague requests get vague quotes.
Never pay a deposit at the booth. Verify the factory first.
Use the fair for supplier discovery. Verify the actual factory location, SMT capacity, and quality records through an on-site visit (Shenzhen / Dongguan are 40–90 minutes by high-speed rail) before placing any order.
Smart Hardware / IoT Sourcing
Sourcing smart products is different from sourcing standard electronics. Most factories lack end-to-end smart hardware expertise — they can manufacture, but rarely design firmware, cloud integration, or custom apps from scratch. That said, some factories do offer standard smart products pre-integrated with common SaaS platforms, and that can be a perfectly valid starting point. When your product needs customization, a Solution Provider (方案商) — a company with in-house R&D that custom-develops and bridges to a factory for manufacturing — is often the better fit. What you want to filter out is a third category: the pure trading company. No R&D, no technical depth, no production capability. They just resell.
Two valid paths:
- A capable factory
Embedded engineering (firmware, hardware, ID design) — strong partner. Or a factory that provides standard smart IoT products that connect to a SaaS platform.
- A solution provider
Custom-develops your product and bridges to a factory for manufacturing.
The real red flag:
A pure trading company — no R&D, no technical depth, no production capability. Not a factory, not a solution provider. Just a reseller.
